North Yarmouth Academy to Join NEPSAC Field Hockey Beginning Fall 2027

Move reflects commitment to elevating competitive opportunities and student-athlete experience

North Yarmouth Academy (NYA) announced that beginning with the fall 2027 season, its Upper School field hockey program will transition from the Maine Principals’ Association (MPA) to the New England Preparatory School Athletic Council (NEPSAC), marking an exciting new chapter for Panther athletics.

NYA currently competes in field hockey as a cooperative team with Gray–New Gloucester High School. The school appreciates this partnership and is grateful to GNG for its continued collaboration and support, which plays an important role in the growth of NYA’s student-athletes.

The move to NEPSAC aligns with NYA’s strategic priorities and long-term vision for providing enhanced competitive experiences, increased exposure, and broader recruiting opportunities for student-athletes.

“We are very excited for the opportunity to transition our field hockey program to NEPSAC for the fall of 2027,” said Matt Poulin, Interim Director of Athletics. “This move represents an important step forward in aligning our athletic department goals with NYA’s college-preparatory academic mission. The addition of our dormitory will be integral to this next phase, allowing us to recruit mission-appropriate, high-level student-athletes locally, nationally, and internationally. This programmatic change reinforces the Academy’s commitment to providing the best possible experience for our student-athletes.”

“NYA is committed to providing an exceptional educational experience, and athletics are an integral part of our Upper School program,” said Head of School Ben Jackson. “Moving to NEPSAC supports our goal of offering programs that challenge and inspire students while opening doors to new opportunities. We believe this step will strengthen our community and enhance the overall student experience.”

To support early roster development and recruiting efforts, Director of Admission Johie Seltzer will serve as an assistant and special advisor to the program during the transition period, leading early scheduling and recruiting efforts.

Seltzer was a standout field hockey player at Bates College, where she also worked in the admission office and served for nearly a decade as the admission athletic liaison, supporting Bates field hockey player recruitment.

“I am very excited to help NYA grow its field hockey program into this new NEPSAC chapter,” said Seltzer. “Having played high school field hockey in Maine, and then at Bates, I know how many great student-athletes we have locally, and I look forward to working with them and their families as they consider joining us at NYA for the 2027 season.”

NYA has launched a national search for a field hockey coach, and interested candidates should contact Matt Poulin.

NYA looks forward to building a competitive, mission-aligned field hockey program that reflects the school’s values of excellence, integrity, and growth.
