Inspiring Journeys:
Explore Nature, Expand Your Mind, Make an Impact

Designed to inspire students to engage deeply with the natural world, the program emphasizes the importance of conservation, environmental stewardship, and thoughtful reflection.

Aligned with NYA’s mission to cultivate a “concern for the larger community and appreciation for the natural environment,” the Kauffmann Program continues the legacy of former NYA trustee and NPS conservationist John M. Kauffmann, a longtime friend of the Academy and advocate for public lands and wilderness preservation.

Program Components

Students engage with the Kauffmann Program through a variety of hands-on experiences, including:

  • Middle School Leadership Academy
  • Glacier Bay Environmental Writing Course
  • Environmental Writing Seminar
  • Kauffmann Prize for Environmental Writing
  • Outing Club & Sea Kayaking in NYA’s fleet of boats
  • Fourth Grade Leadership and Team-Building Program
  • Climbing Wall Adventures on NYA’s campus
  • Brain Training & Resilience Elective
  • Diploma with Distinction in Outdoor & Environmental Leadership

Seeing is Believing

The Glacier Bay Environmental Writing Course includes an unforgettable trip to Alaska, where students spend time camping in Glacier Bay and collaborate with some of the writers they study over the semester. This transformational experience allows students to connect their writing with real-world exploration, environmental observation, and seeing first-had the impact of climate change.

Through all program components, students develop critical thinking, creativity, and leadership skills, while engaging meaningfully with the natural world. Every trip, course, and activity is designed to inspire exploration, reflection, and action.
