Welcome

The Lower School at North Yarmouth Academy welcomes our youngest learners into a warm, engaging community inspired by exploration and discovery. Our student-centered approach allows children to learn with confidence and creativity, supported by faculty who nurture their natural curiosity and inspire them to ask questions, take risks, and find joy in learning.

Students benefit from full access to NYA’s 20+ acre campus—including playing fields, gymnasium, Travis Roy Ice Arena, music building, natural playground, Bicentennial Learning Commons, art studios, and more. Every corner of campus is designed to inspire imagination, movement, and learning. We invite you to experience all the Lower School at NYA has to offer.

I love that NYA really knows my kids. Teachers are honest and transparent about my kids’ strengths and challenges. I love this because I can better support my children! We feel deep gratitude to the NYA community. Thank you!

Overview

Serving toddlers (18 months and up) through grade four, the Lower School inspires children to explore, wonder, and grow. Our Montessori approach through kindergarten develops independence, focus, and foundational academic skills. In grades one through four, students continue to build confidence, curiosity, and readiness for Middle School through a nurturing, developmentally aligned curriculum.

Throughout their Lower School journey, students grow into learners who embody NYA’s core values of respect, honesty, compassion, perseverance, and responsibility. Allied arts classes—including Creative Movement, Physical Education, Spanish, Visual Art, Science, and Music—create a well-rounded experience that inspires both joy and mastery.

Faculty across Lower, Middle, and Upper School collaborate closely to ensure a seamless path through each division. As students advance, they are inspired by meaningful challenges, supported by caring teachers, and prepared to thrive as learners, thinkers, and innovators.

All of [our son’s] teachers for his kindergarten year are outstanding. I do not believe there is a better kindergarten experience in Maine than what NYA supported and delivered for [him] this year. [He] woke up every morning excited to go to school, felt supported in all of his endeavors during the day, and enthusiastically shared his experiences each evening. As a parent, I could not ask for more than that.
