Overview / Program Description:
NYA’s Advanced Music Study Program is designed for highly motivated student musicians who seek to pursue serious musical development within NYA’s rigorous, college-preparatory academic environment. Unlike conservatory-style schools where music is the primary focus, NYA offers students the opportunity to deepen their musical training while remaining fully engaged in a broad academic curriculum and vibrant school community.
Building on NYA’s Diploma with Distinction in Music, the Advanced Music Study Program provides expanded rehearsal, performance, and mentorship opportunities for students demonstrating advanced ability and commitment in piano, strings, guitar, voice, or other instrumental disciplines. The program is intentionally flexible and individualized, shaped by student interests, ensemble needs, and available partnerships, allowing NYA to support a small cohort of dedicated musicians while maintaining academic balance.
- Daily ensemble participation and structured practice time (8:00–9:00 a.m.)
- Students are expected to engage in additional independent practice beyond the morning block, with access to appropriate practice spaces during the school day and after hours
- Students fulfill the existing Diploma with Distinction in Music recital requirements (four juried performances), which are already rigorous and comprehensive
- Additional informal and ensemble-based performances may be offered as opportunities arise
Advanced study may include collaboration with:
- Portland Conservatory of Music
- 317 Main Community Music Center
- Approved local private instructors and professional musicians within the greater Portland area
- Participation requires approval from the Chair of Music and Fine Arts, in consultation with Admissions for new students
- Students must demonstrate advanced ability, strong work ethic, and readiness for sustained musical study
- A minimum two-year commitment is required to graduate with a Diploma with Distinction in Music
