North Yarmouth Academy (NYA) is excited to announce the return of swimming to its roster of winter athletic offerings. NYA Swimming will be led by Upper School English Teacher Kevin Roy. Prior to joining the NYA faculty in 2022, Roy assisted the Windham High School Class A swim team for seven years. During that time, several of his swimmers reached regional and state championships.

“I had been asked a few times over the years since I started teaching at NYA if I’d be interested in coaching swim again considering my past experience,” said Roy. “The answer was always “yes.” The energy of a pool deck is unrivaled in many other competitive arenas. There’s a unique and distinct feeling of collaboration, optimism, and support for teammates and opponents that is difficult to find in any other sport.”

Roy and his committed swimmers are anxious to get back poolside and show they are here to compete. “I believe there’s a special group of swimmers here already that can have a positive impact on the sport at the school, regional, and state level and would love to be a part of that.”

The Panther swim team will compete in Class B with the number one goal of establishing a well-respected, fun loving, competitive group of athletes that looks to continue into the future. Coach Roy knows individual and team improvement will follow close behind, once that environment is in place.

NYA has not had competitive swimming since the 2016 – 2017 season when NYA swimmers trained and competed with Greely High School yet still represented the Academy. Discussions on reforming the program intensified last summer when Roy and a group of students who compete in club swim programs approached NYA Interim Athletic Director Matt Poulin.

“I am very excited for the return of NYA Varsity Swimming as an offering for our student-athletes,” said Poulin. “We have an extremely talented group of athletes already, and it is a privilege to be able to provide this experience at NYA. It means something to compete for your school, and I am thankful we were able to secure a partnership with the Casco Bay YMCA for training. Kevin Roy will be an amazing leader for our program and has been a constant advocate for the formation of this athletic offering at NYA. It is a great day to be a Panther!”
