NYA Student Assists with International Stop Food Waste Day

Yarmouth, Maine, May 6, 2025: North Yarmouth Academy (NYA) sophomore, Haddon Doyle, assisted the CulinArt staff (NYA’s dining partner) with raising awareness during International Stop Food Waste Day. Doyle is an active participant in NYA’s Environmental Club, leading the composting/recycling team. He learned about Stop Food Waste Day from Erin Weeks, Senior Chef Manager with CulinArt at NYA.

The CulinArt team, Weeks and Stephen Trudeau, prepared food on Wednesday, April 30, for NYA students with a special menu focusing on meal production that created as little waste as possible. Doyle encouraged Upper School students to consume all the food they took on this day and reminded students to compost all their leftovers. NYA staff assisted with this global initiative by advising students and helping to make sure there were no leftovers. “This is important because there is food shortage in the world, and if we just ate all the food on the plate, there would be a lot for food to go around,” explained Doyle.

According to their website, Stop Food Waste Day is the largest single day of action in the fight against global food waste. The organization’s mission is to ignite change in the global food waste issue by drawing attention to food waste problems and educating through engaging with society at all levels by sharing practical, creative, and impactful ways to change behavior to reduce food waste in the world.
“We really appreciate Haddon’s help on a daily basis with cutting down on food waste,” said Weeks.
