NYA 3rd Grader Takes Gold at USASA National Ski Cross
Yarmouth, Maine, April 10, 2025: North Yarmouth Academy (NYA) third grade student Fisher Shockey (North Yarmouth) took gold in the Ruggie 7–8-year-old division at the USASA National Ski Cross Championship. He topped a field of 38 other regional qualifiers at the competition held April 8, 2025, at Copper Mountain in Frisco, Colorado. Ski Cross is a timed event where multiple skiers simultaneously race down a course with big-air jumps and high-banked turns. Shockey skied in several USASA sanctioned New England regional ski cross races to qualify for this national event. More specifically, in Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont, winning several gold medals, one silver, and one bronze.
Fisher has been skiing since he was two and half years old. He started ski cross racing when he was five at both Sugarloaf Mountain and Sunday River Resorts. He has been participating in the Carrabassett Valley Academy weekend program, located at Sugarloaf Resort since 2023.
