Mother-Daughter Hasson Team to Head NYA’s Girls Basketball Program

Yarmouth, Maine, August 8, 2024: North Yarmouth Academy (NYA) is excited to announce Lynne Hasson will be the new varsity girls basketball head coach. Coach Hasson comes to NYA after 11 seasons as varsity coach at South Portland High School. Hasson played for the University of Maine. Her daughter, Abby Hasson, will assist her and coach NYA’s junior varsity team. Abby, who played at the University of Southern Maine and UMaine-Farmington, comes to NYA after four seasons as varsity coach at Portland High School girls team.

Lynne Hasson comes to the NYA girls program after the retirement of Tom Robinson, who coached the girls from 2018-2024 and coached the boys team from 2003-2007. “We are so thankful for the time and energy Coach Tom Robinson gave the program and are eager to continue the legacy he leaves in retirement,” said NYA Athletic Director Kelsy Ross.

Coach Lynne Hasson stated, “I am really excited about the 24-25 season. It’s been nice to meet and work with the team over the last couple of Tuesdays. Looking forward to November.”

“The Hasson family is synonymous with Maine basketball, and we are honored to welcome them to the NYA Panther family,” stated Ross. “Lynne’s experiences blend competitiveness with teaching and will elevate the level of recent programmatic success. Her combination of professional and personal basketball at the youth and collegiate levels will be instrumental in mentoring our NYA basketball student-athletes and families. We are beyond thrilled to have Coach Hasson leading the program into the future.”

Further, Ross explained, “having an experienced coach such as Abby join the staff is a gift. Her enthusiasm for the game of basketball and teaching Maine student-athletes is unmatched. Abby’s basketball mind and understanding of what it takes to be a successful student-athlete will be incredibly helpful for our community. We feel lucky to have her already!”

The NYA Girls Basketball program has had great success over the past several years. The team was the Class C South #1 seed 2023-24 and Class C South Runners-Up 2022-2023 and 2021-2022.
