Despite the grip that this Maine winter has had on us over the past few months, we now approach one of the milestones of every academic year: Spring Break. With this respite comes the associated reflection back upon all of the accomplishments of our students during these winter months of NYA’s 204th year. Second semester academic work is now nine weeks complete, post-season play has been enjoyed by several of our athletic teams, the drama squad presented their impressive performances of Beauty and the Beast, and the Studio Band’s Last Waltz completed yet another undefeated season. In addition, our seniors are inevitably beginning to envision their final seven weeks of high school classes that remain as they simultaneously finalize decisions about their collegiate plans for next fall.
As we all anticipate the upcoming break, we commend our students for all that they have accomplished thus far, knowing that the spring will bring even more excitement, learning, and growth.
Head of Upper School
Thanks very much to all families who submitted their re-enrollments by March 1 to ensure inclusion in the upcoming course registration process, which will take place following the March break. Students will be working with their teachers and advisors upon return from vacation to begin developing their preferred course selection for September. Soon afterwards, a schedule template will be designed to best accommodate the choices of all re-enrolled students. This will be an exciting time for students to begin thinking about next year’s selections!
WINTER ATHLETIC RECOGNITION EVENING
At 6:00 p.m., Tuesday, March 20, we will come together to highlight and review our Upper School winter athletic season as well as recognize individual student-athletes who have been selected for awards by the athletic conference or their respective NYA coach(es). Winter coaching staff will notify you regarding other program specific end-of-season gatherings.
The spring athletic season officially begins on Monday, March 26. (Baseball practices for pitchers and catchers will begin one week earlier, on March 19.) Students should remember to bring clothing and gear and be ready to practice.
MARCH BREAK READING CHALLENGE
Librarian Eliot Grady is pleased to announce NYA’s fifth annual March Break Photo Reading Challenge. This year’s theme is “Share a Story.” Find someone to read to – your grandparents, your niece or nephew, your stuffed animal collection, whomever, whatever – and take a photo or a selfie and email it to Eliot. All photo entries must be received by noon on Wednesday, March 21 to be considered. The pictures will be judged by a panel of faculty and staff, and a winner for each Division (Lower, Middle, Upper, and Faculty/Staff) will be announced, and prizes awarded at Friday Forum on March 23. Get creative, have fun, and share a story!
NYA WELCOMES DR. ROSS GREENE
NYA is delighted to be welcoming Dr. Ross Greene to campus on April 4. Dr. Greene is a child psychologist and founder of the non-profit organization, Lives in the Balance, originator of the Collaborative and Proactive Solutions (CPS) approach, and a best-selling author. During the afternoon, Dr. Greene will be speaking with students in grades five through twelve and presenting to faculty and staff. We hope that you will be able to join us at 6:00 p.m. in the Middle School Community Room for the parent session with Dr. Greene. Light refreshments and babysitting will be provided.
PARENTS’ NIGHT OUT
NYA’s Parents’ Association is hosting a Parents’ Night Out event for all NYA parents on Thursday April 5 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Owl and Elm in Yarmouth. Babysitting will be available at the Lower School for toddlers through fourth grade students from 4:45-7:15 p.m. We hope to see you there!
The NYA Yearbook is a much-loved, highly-anticipated publication. The yearbooks will be passed out to students during our NYA Picnic/Fun Day on June 1, 2018. All NYA Middle and Upper School students are automatically charged for a 2017-18 yearbook, so you will see a $55 charge per student on your March bill. Don’t want a yearbook? No problem, just contact Lisa McGlinn in the business office, 207-847-5425, and she will reverse the charge. If you choose not to purchase a yearbook for your student, please inform your child so that he or she will be prepared not to receive one on June 1. Please contact yearbook advisor Fatou Diagana with any questions.
