Congratulations to the three North Yarmouth Academy (NYA) students who earned 2017 Scholastic Writing Awards! Afton Morton (’20 Freeport), who took home 3 Gold Keys last year, added another Gold Key and an Honorable Mention to her collection. Morton’s “Concert Thoughts” was awarded the Gold Key in the Personal Essay/Memoir category. This piece will be judged in mid-March for national recognition. Her Flash Fiction, Living Beyond Time received an Honorable Mention.
NYA senior Kiersten Marr (’17 Falmouth) also impressed in the Personal Essay/Memoir category. Her submission, “Black and White”, won a Silver Key.
Ellie Hilscher (’20 Boothbay) delved into the Science Fiction/Fantasy category and earned an Honorable Mention for “Children in Charge”.
The Maine Region of the Scholastic Writing Awards received 465 submissions this year. 40 Gold Keys, 71 Silver Keys, and 107 Honorable Mentions were given. Submissions are juried by luminaries in the literary arts, some of whom are past award recipients. Panelists look for works that best exemplify originality, technical skill, and the emergence of a personal voice or vision.
Award-winning students and their teacher, Heidi Grant, will be recognized at a ceremony on March 17, 2017 at 6:00 p.m. in Hannaford Hall at the Abromson Center on the University of Southern Maine’s Portland campus.
