The 6th Annual Maine Acoustic Festival

Thirty-nine middle and high school music students from around the state will come together for a 3-day traditional acoustic music festival that culminates in a Student Showcase Performance on Sunday, April 8 at The University of Southern Maine’s Hannaford Hall in Portland.

The students were selected by audition to participate in the festival that includes workshops, rehearsals, and performances. “It’s fun to see how the festival evolves from year to year,” said MAF Coordinator Amanda Gale. “The number of high-quality vocalists really stood out during this year’s audition process, so we’re incorporating more singing into the festival weekend.”

The Maine Acoustic Festival was created both to celebrate the music that helped shape Maine’s culture and to give students interested in these genres the chance to learn from world class musicians. The 2018 Teaching Artists are Bennett Konesni (Traditional American Harmony), Corey Dimario (Americana), Ellen Gawler (Maine Maritime), and David Surette (Celtic).

Maine Acoustic Festival is also pleased to welcome renowned composer, violinist and creative-community builder Daniel Bernard-Roumain , who comes to us through a collaboration with Portland Ovations. Roumain will lead a free violin workshop that is open to all strings players under the age of 12 at Portland’s East End Community School on Saturday, April 7, 11am followed by a pizza lunch. Later that afternoon, Roumain will offer a workshop for festival participants in Yarmouth, demonstrating how he blends funk, rock, hip-hop, improvisational and classical music into an energetic and experiential sonic form.

The students participating in the 2018 Maine Acoustic Festival come from 10 schools and the homeschool community.
