Dear Families, Faculty, and Staff,
Welcome back! The last few weeks have been busy ones with athletic preseason, the Lower School Family Picnic, New Middle and Upper School Student Orientation, and Freshman Orientation. In addition to many returning students, we are welcoming over 70 new students throughout all of the divisions. I look forward to seeing everyone on Tuesday.
Convocation will take place at 7:45 a.m. on the front lawn. Everyone in the community is invited, and there will be a reception for parents following the brief ceremony. Convocation is optional for Toddler and Primary students, and parents may opt to bring children to those classrooms beginning at 7:45 a.m. The first day is a dress up day for students.
It has been a busy summer with several exciting projects either underway or completed. The new tennis courts look beautiful and are ready for the fall Middle School tennis season. The new turf field has been installed and is hosting practices. The first regular season NYA contest will be Thursday September 5-varsity girls soccer at 4:00 p.m. Demolition on the library and lounge has begun, and construction of the learning commons will continue throughout the first semester. We will keep you updated on progress and you may follow progress on nya.org/pantherprojects.
An All-Family Cookout will take place on Thursday, September 5 at 5:00 p.m. I hope you are all able to attend this new event hosted by the NYA Parents’ Association. Upper School and Middle School Parents’ Nights will be held the second week of the school year. This is a wonderful opportunity to meet your child’s teachers and gain a greater understanding of overall course objectives for the year. The evening is not designed for conversations on your child’s individual progress. Middle and Upper School Parent-Advisor Conferences are scheduled to begin on October 3 and will be a great opportunity to discuss your child’s progress. The schedule for Parents’ Night is as follows:
- Upper School Parents’ Night, Wednesday, September 11:
- Freshman parents arrive by 6:00 p.m. in the Middle School Community Room and Sophomore-Senior/PG parents arrive by 6:45 p.m. in Safford.
- Middle School Parents’ Night, Thursday, September 12:
- 6:30 p.m. in the Middle School Community Room
Save the date Friday, October 11, 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. for Upper and Middle School Grandparents’ Day. We welcome grandparents and grand-friends to campus for musical performances, senior speeches, classroom visits, and lunch. If you haven’t already, please fill out the grandparent information form. We are also looking for a volunteer co-chair to assist Debra Ramsey P’20, P’15 and the Development Office in planning this year’s event. Please reach out to Crystal Gordon if you are interested in this opportunity or would like more information about co-chairing this event.
NYA families are invited to Come Home to NYA activities. For a full schedule, visit NYA.org/ComeHome. A couple of opportunities that may be of interest include the Edgar F. White ’38 NYA Athletic Hall of Fame induction of Allie Tocci Hurley ’08, which will include special remarks by Travis Roy ’94. All are welcome to attend on Friday, September 27 at 10:00 a.m. in the gym.
The annual NYA Steve Morris Golf Tournament will take place Saturday, September 28 at Falmouth Country Club. Many faculty, current parents, alumni, and friends play in the tournament. Proceeds benefit the Steve Morris Scholarship Fund, which provides financial aid to current NYA students. The scramble format makes it a fun tournament for all abilities. Put together a team of four or sign up individually!
The first Saturday in December is Yarmouth’s Hometown Holidays celebration. As part of the festivities, NYA hosts a craft fair in our gym and Safford. This is a very popular event that raises funds for the Parents’ Association. The PA is looking for someone to co-chair this year’s event. If you would like additional information, please contact PA president, Tori Baron.
In the event of school cancellations, delays, or other unscheduled changes to the normal school day, families will be contacted by various methods including text messaging. To ensure that you can receive text messages from the NYA Parent Alert system, please text START to 22383 and add 22383 as a contact in your phone’s address book. In addition, please update your information in Family Web using the Custodial Parent Information Form to ensure that your cell phone number is correct and your Parent Alert settings are set to receive text messages. Instructions on using this form can be found here.
A few important reminders:
If your child will be utilizing Before or After Care In the Lower School, please sign up through this link. Space is limited by student-teacher ratios, so it is essential to sign up to ensure you have a spot. Daily drop-in sign-ups are permitted based on availability.
If your child plans to purchase lunch or snacks from our cafeteria, please deposit funds into your child’s My School Dining Account. Students must have funds in their account to make a purchase. Students may also pay with cash. We do not accept credit or debit cards in the cafeteria.
A reminder that students enrolled in Advanced Placement courses will notice a few changes this year. Please review the College Board Handout for Parents and Students for more details. Before classes begin, it is very important that students create a College Board account (if they do not have one already) and make note of their account, username, and password. This information will be required during the first days of school for them to join their AP class(es) and obtain access to valuable online resources. Please direct any questions to Lisa Robbins, AP Coordinator. Thank you for your timely help with this request!
A reminder that NYA has a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) program for students in grades 7-12. Students in these grades should have a devices for use in class. Specifications for the devices may be found through this link.
The first spot to learn of school cancellations is the Head of School Instagram Account. It will also include my observations around and about campus. Follow me on jacskonnya_hos. See the Social Media section below for information on NYA’s other social media accounts.
With the exception of holiday weekends/weeks you will receive either a Sunday Letter from me or a division newsletter. They will arrive in your inbox each Sunday afternoon. You can review past Sunday Letters and division newsletters here.
I am looking forward to a terrific school year! See you on Tuesday.
