NYA Announces Support for Opportunity & Excellence Fund and New Endowed Scholarship Honoring Hannah Austin ’15

Yarmouth, Maine, May 23, 2024: In advance of the North Yarmouth Academy (NYA) Soirée, alumni, parents, and grandparents have already made a historic impact on the Academy this year by contributing more than $1.7 million, which includes over $700,000 for the endowment.

One critical area of support has been the Opportunity & Excellence Fund, which exists as both a current-use and an endowment fund. The fund reduces financial barriers that may prevent students from accessing the full range of activities available at NYA. Since its creation in 2021, more than 15 benefactors have generously contributed to this fund, helping nearly 50 students with everything from need-based financial aid, covering meal plan fees, technology, academic supplies, athletic equipment, musical instruments as well as tutoring and academic support.

The most recent gift to the Opportunity & Excellence Fund is from the McGoldrick Family Fund, managed by Dick and Carolyn McGoldrick P’01, GP’24, Meghan Stornelli ’01, Katherine Urbanek P’24, and Charlie Urbanek. Their gift celebrates NYA’s commitment to providing a best-in-class college preparatory education for promising students regardless of their socioeconomic background.

“Our family supports access to education and is thrilled to provide students with the opportunity to build their knowledge, skills, and confidence and prepare them for success at NYA, in college, and beyond,” said NYA Trustee Meghan (McGoldrick) Stornelli ’01.

The Hannah Austin ’15 Memorial Scholarship Fund was established this month with a leadership gift from Nick and Jessie Alberding P’18, P’21. The scholarship fund, which also received wide-spread community support, celebrates the strength, courage, athletic dedication, tenacity, sense of humor, and optimism of Hannah Austin who passed away in April after a courageous, three-year battle with brain cancer.

“The Austins have meant so much to our family. Hannah was a mentor and lifelong friend to our daughter when she first joined the NYA Cross Country Team, and head of Upper School Eric Austin P’15, P’17 was always supportive of both of our children throughout their time at NYA,” said NYA Trustee Nick Alberding. “Creating this endowed scholarship fund to honor Hannah is our way of celebrating the profound, positive impact the Austins have made on our lives and so many others in the NYA community.”

The inaugural Hannah Austin ’15 Memorial Scholarship awards will be presented at the NYA Soirée on Friday, May 31, to two graduating seniors. Recipients will receive funds to pursue post-secondary education at a college or university.

“The generosity of those who make gifts to NYA strengthens the Academy and expands our ability to support students today and into the future,” said NYA’s Head of School Ben Jackson. “We could not be more grateful for this philanthropic support, which impacts every aspect of life on campus.”

While continuing its goal of growing the endowment through philanthropy, NYA is also ensuring the Academy can deliver the best possible academic programs today. Funds raised at the 40th annual spring Soirée will honor the dedication and excellence of the NYA faculty by investing in their professional development and providing the resources they need to respond to students’ dynamic interests. The entire NYA community is invited to gather on Friday, May 31 for the Soirée. The event features live and silent auctions, games, dinner, and a paddle raise to benefit the NYA faculty.
