NYA’s Sarah Moore ’24 Jumps into Record Books

Sarah Moore Track and Field Spring 2023Yarmouth, Maine, June 16, 2023: North Yarmouth Academy (NYA) rising senior Sarah Moore became NYA’s first, (and second) New England Champion when she placed first in Long Jump and Triple Jump, and second in High Jump at the New England Regional Track and Field Meet in Bangor on Saturday, June 10. Her first place finish in the Long Jump with a jump of 19′ 0.25″ was a 9.5″ personal record which also makes her the second best girls long jumper in state history. Her first place finish in the Triple Jump with a jump of 37′ 8.25″ was also a personal record, this time by 1′ 4.75″, and makes her the eighth best triple jumper of all-time for Maine. Her second place finish in the High Jump was decided on tiebreakers at a height of 5’5″ which is just 1″ below her personal record of 5’6″. This makes her, just for this year, a three-time All-New England award recipient. In addition, she currently holds four NYA school records in these events.

Moore picked up two state titles and medaled in two others at the Maine State Meet earlier this spring. She and her coaches knew she would have a good showing at the New England event, but no one was more surprised than Moore herself. “I am still trying to wrap my head around it all,” said a near-shocked Moore. “The feeling of hearing the officials say the number and then looking at my coaches and family in disbelief and excitement was a surreal feeling.”

“Sarah is an unbelievably coachable athlete who thrives on competition both with herself and her competitors,” praised NYA Track & Field Coaches Chris Mazzurco and David Gagne. “To be able to compete in three jumping events in one day at the level Sarah did against the very best athletes in all of New England is something we have never seen before. The variety of technical and physical skills needed to be successful in those three events are varied but were never a stumbling block for Sarah. In fact, simultaneously competing in the triple and high jump on opposite sides of the track while keeping her head in the game is more evidence of the expanding skillset that Sarah has in addition to just the physical aspects of being an elite athlete. Her mental fortitude in training and competition has really allowed her to take her performances to the next level this season,” explained Mazzurco.Sarah Moore Track and Field Spring 2023

Moore credits her coaches for that mental training as well as the physical. She admittedly thought she wouldn’t hit the numbers that she did. “While my will to compete was always there, sometimes my body was not ready to put up with what I wanted it to do, but that’s where it became mental for me. I knew I needed to push through that mental block. But the one-on-one time with my coaches the week prior to Saturday really helped me with understanding what I needed to do and keep in mind while competing on Saturday.”

Moore plans to continue training throughout the summer and winter with eyes on setting personal records next spring and leading the team as a senior.
