Briana O’Hare Laurence ‘99
London, England
Executive Director, Nomura

Briana O’Hare Laurence ‘99 came to NYA as an eighth-grade student from Bowdoinham, Maine.

“My parents encouraged me to look at NYA as a sixth grader, but initially I didn’t want to leave my hometown friends”, remembers Briana. Ultimately, it was the strong sense of community and the inclusive culture that drove Briana to enroll at NYA. Her sister, Erin, later followed and enrolled at NYA as a freshman. “I remember during my admission tour being so impressed by the sense of community at NYA. When I walked around campus, everyone greeted each other and people kept their belongings in the hallways and classrooms without worry or concern,” said Briana. “I respected the strong principles of honesty, trust, and openness at NYA.”

During her time as an NYA student, Briana’s favorite subjects were History and English. She also played field hockey, ice hockey, lacrosse, ran track, and played the flute in the orchestra.

After graduation from NYA, Briana attended Hamilton College where she was a member of the women’s ice hockey team, studied abroad in London, and spent a semester in New York City. She majored in International Relations with a minor in Economics.

Three weeks after graduating from Hamilton in 2003, Briana moved to New York City and began her career at the law firm Willkie Farr & Gallagher, and then moved to Nomura, a global investment bank headquartered in Tokyo, with offices in New York, London, and Hong Kong. She also completed an M.B.A. in Finance at New York University’s Stern School of Business.

Ultimately, it was the strong sense of community, the culture of respect, and the desire to encounter different perspectives that drove Briana to enroll at NYA.

Briana is currently an Executive Director at Nomura, focused on Senior Relationship Management for financial institution clients across both the Investment Banking and Global Markets Divisions in EMEA.

“The most critical thing I learned at NYA was how to think. My teachers – Mrs. Feldman, Mr. Hallett and Mr. Henderson especially – encouraged class participation, the open exchange of ideas, and taught us how to listen to and appreciate different perspectives, as well as articulate our own. At NYA, I built strong and authentic relationships with a wide range of people, which has been an important skill for me professionally,” remarked Briana.

Now a dual-US and UK citizen, Briana lives in London, England with her husband and two children. In her spare time, she enjoys long-distance cycling, tennis, running, and has completed the New York City and Washington DC Marathons.

As the newest member of the NYA Alumni Association Leadership Council, Briana’s goal is to help connect students with alumni to add visibility to the ways NYA alumni have identified, prepared for and developed their careers.
