NYA Music Teacher Named Maine Music Educator of the Year

North Yarmouth Academy (NYA) is very proud to announce that music teacher Linda Vaillancourt received the Maine Music Educator of the Year Award for 2018! Vaillancourt was presented with the award by Maine Music Educator Association (MMEA) Board President Sue Barre at the Maine All-State Music Festival in Orono on May 17. MMEA presents this award to recognize “exceptional support and outstanding accomplishments by one or more MMEA members to the advancement of music education in the schools of Maine.”

“I know from my time teaching,” said Vaillancourt, “that there are a lot of dedicated and amazing music teachers in our state. A lot! That they would choose me for this recognition… well, it makes my head spin to think about it! I am incredibly honored, flattered, and grateful.”

Linda Vaillancourt, Maine Music Educator of the YearVaillancourt began teaching at NYA in 2005. She has a very broad job description, teaching classroom music, band, and strings to toddlers to seniors. She is the only NYA faculty member to not only teach in all divisions on campus but to teach in every grade. Her philosophy is simple and to the heart, “I want to teach a love of music. Music is so much a part of our culture. It is everywhere. I want students to be able to recognize it, and I want them to be able to participate in it. It is not necessary to be a fully-trained professional musician to have joy in hearing music and to be able to create it. I hope to be able to spark that interest in the young people I work with.”

In addition to teaching at NYA, Vaillancourt directs the Youth Orchestra of Lewiston-Auburn, performs actively as a member of the Bangor Symphony Orchestra, Maine Music Society, and Maine Pro Musica. She often manages or coordinates various Maine District II festivals, serves as the manager of the Maine All-State Orchestra, and she is the Chamber Music Director at the Southern Maine Strings Camp.

“Linda Vallaincourt is an amazing educator who inspires musicians of all abilities and age levels,” praised NYA Head of School Ben Jackson. “Congratulations to Linda on this well-deserved award.”
