Yarmouth, Maine, March 25, 2022: The North Yarmouth Academy (NYA) Make-A-Wish Club presented Make-A-Wish® Maine with a check for $7,000 today, funds raised from a culmination of events held over the past several years. These funds will enable Make-A-Wish® Maine to grant a wish to a child with a critical illness. The NYA Make-A-Wish Club is in its 20th year and has donated funds to grant over 11 wishes and raised over $60,000.
This past fall, Make-A-Wish® Maine presented the NYA Make-A-Wish Club with the Brendan Batson Award to recognize Maine youth who give substantial time and energy to support the Make-A-Wish® Maine’s mission.
There are 38 members of the current NYA Make-A-Wish Club, and their goal is to raise money for Make-A-Wish® Maine by developing fundraisers throughout the year. Each wish costs approximately $7,000. Recent fundraisers include: bingo, movie night, pancake breakfast, ice hockey clinic, compatibility survey, Dress Down Days, tiki bar snack sale, candy grams, and more. “At Make-A-Wish, we do what we can to improve the lives of kids suffering with critical illnesses. It is truly an honor to be a part of the club. Nothing is more satisfying than knowing you are improving the life of someone who needs a smile,” said NYA’s Make-A-Wish Club communications director, Harry Marcus ’22. Faculty advisor to the club, Liz Smith, explains, “We have a large, active club, and the students are highly motivated to raise as much money as possible each year. Even during the pandemic, the kids came up with creative fundraisers that fit within the confines of our COVID-19 restrictions.”
At today’s presentation, Unum’s Cary Olson Cartwright announced that beginning in the 2022-2023 school year, Unum will match all school fundraising dollars up to $15,000. Olson Cartwright said, “We are inspired by students like you, who give their time, talent, and treasure to enrich the world around them. We hope this incentive will help boost all of the terrific work these students and more like them are doing all year.”
Make-A-Wish® Maine was founded in 1992 with a mission of creating life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses. On average, a wish is granted to a Maine child every five days at a cost of $7,000 per wish, and over 1,650 wishes have been granted to Maine children.
