The season of giving is once again upon us. This is not only the time of year to reflect and give thanks, but it is also a time to remember that not everyone is as fortunate as we are. Concern for the greater community at North Yarmouth Academy (NYA) is a year-round commitment engraved into the mission statement. The call for charitable donations is at its peak during the holiday season and so are the efforts of NYA to answer.
Fresh off the heels of the Make-A-Wish Club’s successful Black and Orange Friday Hockey Clinic, that raised over $1000 for Make-A-Wish of Maine, the Middle and Upper Schools turn their full attention to Holiday Families. Each year, this is a wonderful community effort that supports families in need during the holidays. For the last few years, the Middle School has worked with Molly McMahon ‘95, NYA alumna and daughter of Middle School English teacher Jack McMahon. Molly is a social worker with Greater Portland Health, and she has connected NYA with families in need of just about anything and everything. Advisory groups commit to purchase needed items for members of particular families. In this way, families receive personalized gifts suitable for each family member. The students shop and then wrap the gifts. Gifts include winter clothing, toys, bicycles, beds, and household items – pretty much anything the family needs. Money is raised through five “dress down days,” when students contribute $3 to be out of regular dress code. Wednesday, December 7, is the final opportunity to dress down for this year’s holiday families. If you would like to contribute to Holiday Families in any way, please contact the NYA main office at 207-846-9051.
