Welcome Jules Fernandes to the Lower School Art Program

Yarmouth, Maine, March 29, 2024: Please join us in welcoming Jules Fernandes, the new Lower School long-term art substitute to North Yarmouth Academy. Jules steps in while Christa Mecham is out for family leave this spring. Congratulations to Christa and Welcome Jules! We are delighted to have Jules teaching art to students in Toddler through Grade 5 and installing our spring art show.

“I am so excited to join you and teach elementary art while Miss Christa is away having her baby,” said Fernandes. “My background is mostly in wheel-thrown ceramics, and I’ve been a pottery teacher for kids and adults for the past four years at Portland Pottery. However, I’m excited to get back into doing art full-time with kids. My goal as an art teacher is always to encourage students to create in their own unique way and learn to fall in love with the artistic process more than the final product. I believe creativity is an inherent quality in all people, and I love working with kids and helping them to unlock their artistic visions and build confidence at a young age. Thank you for welcoming me to the community, and I look forward to getting to know more faces!”

Jules holds a B.S. from the University of Pittsburgh and a Maine certification in Pre-K – Grade 12 Art. For the past four years, Jules was an instructor at Portland Pottery teaching classes to students in K-8 and adults. Jules previously worked in the “Make It Happen Program” with Portland Public Schools and interned at the Education Law Center and the Steppingstone Foundation. She also volunteered with Portland Adult Education and Massachusetts Immigrant & Refugee Advocacy Coalition.
