NYA Welcomes Dr. Glenn Cummings as 2024 Commencement Speaker

Glenn Cummings NYA Commencement Speaker 2024Yarmouth, Maine, May 2, 2024: North Yarmouth Academy (NYA) is pleased to announce its 2024 commencement speaker is Dr. Glenn Cummings. Cummings served eight years as university president within the University of Maine System, with one year at the University of Maine at Augusta and seven years at the University of Southern Maine (USM). Since 2022, he’s overseen business investments and philanthropic initiatives of the Glickman-Lauder family. NYA’s 210th Commencement will take place on Sunday, June 2, at 11:00 a.m. under the tent on Denney field, behind the Curtis Building, 148 Main Street, Yarmouth. The ceremony is open to the public.

Dr. Cummings has B.A. from Ohio Wesleyan, a Master’s in Education from Brown University, a Master’s in Public Administration from the Harvard Kennedy School of Government, and a Doctorate in Higher Education Management from the University of Pennsylvania.

While at USM, he set records in philanthropy which transformed the Portland campus with a new student center and residence hall, and he laid the groundwork for the first-ever USM Center for the Arts. During his time at USM, out-of-state student enrollment was at an all-time high. He raised over $10 million for the Promise Scholars Program for first generation college students, and he balanced the budget leaving with a $6.5 million surplus.

Dr. Cummings had a political career prior to his work at the University of Maine system. He was appointed by President Barak Obama as Deputy Assistant Secretary within the U.S. Department of Education in 2008 where he worked to increase overall national college attainment and served as chair of the Department’s Green Initiatives Program.

He also served as Speaker of the House and Majority Leader in the Maine House of Representatives. There, he chaired the Legislature’s Joint Committee on Education and Cultural Affairs. The first clean election candidate in the country under Maine’s clean election law in 2000, Cummings led the passage of nationally recognized legislation including bills in anti-predatory lending, lead poisoning prevention, land conservation, K-12 funding formulas, and sponsored a bill that led to the creation of the Maine Community College System.

Cummings began his academic career in Gorham as a high school history teacher and department head. He continues to be a long-serving member of the USM faculty.
