Upper School 2021 Preseason Reminders and COVID Protocols

August 13, 2021

Dear Panthers,

With summer nearly in the rearview, temperatures rising just in time for the preseason, and your summer reading likely looming, it’s time to turn our heads and look the fall season straight in the eye. I am so eager to have you on campus!

The 2021 fall preseason officially begins on Monday, August 16. Complete and specific preseason schedules were communicated via email by coaches and can be found on our new Activity Scheduler, rSchoolToday. If you have not received an email, please contact me.

Please be sure that your Health Forms have been completed and returned to Ms. Moody, our Health Services Coordinator, prior to the start of your first preseason session. A student cannot participate without completed forms! If you have injuries or physical restrictions, be sure to communicate those with Ms. Dean, our athletic trainer, as soon as possible.

As we look ahead to the fall seasons, much remains to be determined regarding the impact COVID will have on our day-to-day activities. At this time, and in conjunction with the most recent CDC recommendations, the following important protocols will be implemented for our NYA fall athletic season:

  • Teams will participate in normal, pre-COVID competition schedules throughout the state. These will continue to be finalized in the upcoming weeks.
  • All students, faculty, staff, game personnel, and spectators will self-screen prior to arriving on campus. If anyone feels ill, they should stay home!
  • NYA campus will be open to home and away spectators of all sports.
  • NYA will continue to livestream home events via Vimeo, weather permitting.
  • Locker room use will mirror that of the 2020 fall, with specific times and locations provided to all students. In an effort to minimize unsupervised activity amongst our student population, team use of NYA’s Travis Roy Arena locker rooms is prohibited this fall. Students may change during last period study halls, without dress code penalty.
  • Mask wearing:
    • When outdoors, mask wearing is optional for all students, coaches, game personnel, and spectators regardless of vaccination status.
    • When indoors, mask wearing is required of all coaches, game personnel, and spectators regardless of vaccination status.
    • When indoors, and participating in competition-like physical activity as determined by coaches, student mask wearing is optional (i.e. volleyball scrimmages/matches, cardio training in the gym/treadmill, etc.)
  • Students will ride to and from all competitions as a team, on NYA-provided transportation.
    • Students, coaches, and bus drivers will wear a mask when traveling in a vehicle
  • Students will bring their own water bottle to all athletic activities – no sharing!
    • Team specific water jugs will be provided for training and competitions for students to refill their individual water bottles.
    • A contactless water fountain remains available in the Curtis hallway.
  • Team and Department of Athletics parent information nights will be conducted via Zoom this fall. This decision has been made in order to minimize in-person contact within our community. Details on those meetings will be shared next week.

We highly encourage students to enroll in the NYA Pooled Testing program. Participation protects our community against the potential spread of COVID and also helps our teams stay engaged in the fall athletic seasons. Be sure to complete your Pooled Testing Consent Form prior to the start of preseason. Specific preseason pooled testing protocols will be shared by Ms. Moody and coaches next week.

As always, be in touch with questions or follow-up. Be sure to follow @NYAPanthers on Twitter and NYA Athletics (@nyapanthers) on Facebook. We hope that everyone enjoyed a happy and healthy summer and look forward to seeing you all very, very soon!
