About the program goals and head coach ...
We are delighted to announce that Shelby Turcotte will direct this year’s NYA Basketball Skills Academy. He holds a masters degree in exercise science from California University of Pennsylvania (2007) as well as a bachelors in sports management from Thomas College (2005). Shelby was the head varsity boys basketball coach at Monmouth Academy from 2005-2007. He takes great pride in teaching the finer points of the game of basketball including all offensive and defensive skills. Every player who attends will come away with new information and skills which will help make them better athletes, better basketball players, and better people. Shelby is able to bring out the best in every player he works with, and is a teacher and a mentor in all capacities. All participants will leave understanding the value of self-esteem, teamwork, and hard work.

Session I: Step-by-Step

Participants will acquire many of the tools needed to see their game improve. Most aspects of the game will be covered, including but not limited to: offensive positioning, shooting technique, ball-handling, passing skills, and defensive pressure. Local high school stars will assist in coaching small groups (determined by age, skill level, and/or gender). Those attending will learn the value of hard work, goal setting, optimism, and self-confidence. If you are an aspiring basketball player looking for a fun but serious atmosphere, you need to attend!
A typical day is as follows:
- 9:00-9:15 Introduction and warm-up
- 9:15-10:15 Shooting technique demonstration, drillwork, and contests
- 10:15-11:15 "The Big 3" skill discussion and practice
- 11:15-11:50 3-on-3 skill game
- 11:50-12:30 Lunch (bring your own)
- 12:30-12:50 Proper positioning when defending the basketball
- 12:50-1:45 1-on-1 and 2-on-2 defensive game
- 1:45-2:45 Counselor and camp contest(s)
- 2:45-3:00 Wrap-up and recap
Session II: Beyond the Game

For dedicated players looking to take their game to a new level! Developed basketball players will learn to improve their game with more than just physical skills. While shooting, dribbling, passing, and defense will be covered, this session will go beyond the basic skills to the "how" and "why" of many aspects of basketball. Video analysis will be a part of each training session and will be used extensively to assist each player's development. All attendees will also discover how to magnify their best skills to display their strengths. If you want to learn how to maximize your basketball potential and take your game to new heights, this is your camp! Limited enrollment, serious players apply today!

- 5:00-5:05 Previous session recap
- 5:05-5:10 Topic introduction (understanding court space and positioning)
- 5:10-6:00 Video analysis of court space
- 6:00-7:45 On-court demonstration and drill work
- 7:45-8:00 Q & A about understanding court space
