Maine Law and NYA Policy
All students and parents are governed by both state and federal laws regarding the use of alcohol, tobacco and drugs. In addition, all NYA students are governed by the policies set forth in the NYA handbook.
NYA Policies
The NYA student handbook states that within the community standards of NYA, use of alcohol and drugs is considered a severe misconduct. Alcohol, drug, and tobacco use and misuse
have legal consequences!!!!!!!!!
Alcohol –- did you know that:

Allowing minors not under the supervision of their parents to drink alcohol in your home (even if you do not supply the alcohol) is a criminal offense, which may result in fines or even jail sentencing.

Possession or use of alcohol by any person under 21 is illegal except in their home in the presence of their parents. Furnishing alcohol to a minor in violation of the law is a Class D crime and carries monetary penalties.

It is illegal for any person under 21 to transport alcohol in their vehicle except in the scope of their employment or at the request of a parent.

A driver under 21 who operates or attempts to operate a motor vehicle with any alcohol in their blood can lose their license for 180 days.

You may be liable under Maine law for property damages or injuries which arise from allowing a person under 21 under your control to consume alcohol or by serving any visibly intoxicated person.

Homeowners insurance will not cover claims arising from host liability or allowing minors to consume alcohol as such actions are in violation of the law.
Tobacco –– did you know that:

Fines for possession of cigarettes or tobacco products range from $100 to $500.

It is illegal to sell, furnish, give away, or offer to sell tobacco products to any person under the age of 18.

It is illegal for anyone under 18 to purchase, possess or use cigarettes, cigarette papers, or other tobacco products.
Drugs –– did you know that:

Possession or use of scheduled (illegal) drugs or misuse of prescription drugs is illegal.

Possession of drug paraphernalia is illegal in Maine.

Use of drugs not sold either over the counter or pursuant to a prescription is illegal.
