Congratulations to North Yarmouth Academy (NYA) students honored in the 2018 Maine Scholastic Art and Writing Awards.
Marley Boettcher ’20 won a Gold Key for “Pivot,” a mixed media piece. Jack Lent ’19 and Sam Yankee ’21 received two Silver Keys each. Jack won for his charcoal pieces, “Lights Across the Bridge” and “Old Glory,” and Sam for his graphite on paper works, “Racing on the Bay” and “Cupola and Birds.” Anna Yankee ’21 took home one Silver Key for her oil on canvas work “Pink Doughnut” and an Honorable Mention for “Spoon on Napkin.”
Taylor Hemenway ’21, Blythe Thompson ’22, and Madeleine Vaillancourt ‘22 also received Honorable Mentions.
Marley, Jack, Sam, and Anna’s works were on display as part of the Scholastic Art and Writing Award’s student show at Maine College of Art (MECA) in Portland from January 29 through February 10. The exhibition featured over 120 works that represent the Gold Key and Silver Key individual award winners plus one sample of any senior portfolio that received recognition.
Certificates were presented to all Honorable Mentions, Silver, and Gold Key winners from the Maine region during an awards ceremony at MECA on February 10.
On the Scholastic Writing side, five students were recognized for their compositions. Rick Hilscher ‘18 earned a Silver Key for his poem “Primal Fear” and an Honorable Mention in Flash Fiction for “Plastic Walls.” Silver Keys also went to Lexi Haedrich ’21 for her short story “Mia’s Room” and Andrew Schaffer ’19 for his Sci-Fi/Fantasy piece “Hope.”
Honorable mentions were awarded to Parker Elkins ’18 for his Personal Essay/Memoir “Restlessness” and Justin Guo ‘18 for his Personal Essay/Memoir “The Decline of Family Reunion Dinner.”
Award-winning students and their teachers will be recognized on March 16 at 6:00p.m. at a ceremony in Hannaford Hall, University of Southern Maine, Portland campus. Keynote speaker will be Maine author, Lynn Plourde.
