North Yarmouth Academy (NYA) is officially announcing plans to renovate and expand the current library space in the Curtis Building (148 Main Street, Yarmouth) into a state-of-the-art learning commons. The NYA Learning Commons will be the nerve center of the school and provide the structure and space for information technology, online education, tutoring, collaboration, content creation, meeting, reading, and study. Learning commons are increasingly popular in school library settings and are frequently cited as models for the “library of the future.”
The scope of the project more than doubles the current space to 3,250 square feet. A newly constructed 850 square foot extension features an abundance of natural light and provides students with an environment that inspires creativity and facilitates productivity. A 500 square foot patio will allow students to bring their study outside. Three group study rooms will offer students and teachers the space to work in small groups for research, writing, speech, and tutoring. Two smaller study suites provide space for individual study while also remaining open to the commons areas. Each has a glass panel wall to keep an open aspect to the rooms.
The space is designed to engineer and drive future-oriented learning and teaching across all divisions. Research indicates collaborative learning, the active exchange of ideas within small groups, not only increases interest among the participants but also promotes critical thinking and creativity – all skills that NYA students will need to be successful in the future.
Architecture, furnishings, and organization are important components to a learning commons as these spaces are designed to be rearranged by users according to needs. Technology upgrades in the space will support the exploration of resources and ideas. The facilities upgrade will be aligned with our mission of enhancing our community’s overall educational experience and bringing out the best in each student.
The NYA Learning Commons will also support various programs including new early literacy and STEM programs for Lower School students.
Funding for this $700,000 project will come through private donations and foundation support. As of this printing, half the funds needed for the project had been committed by four generous NYA benefactors.
