Athletics at NYA

Every Student is an Athlete at NYA

At NYA, all students are required to participate in an afternoon activity – school athletics or performing arts – each season. Students go from class to their afternoon activity every day after school. Team sports are valued for the many lessons they teach: physical fitness, teamwork, sportsmanship, leadership and personal sacrifice to reach a common goal.

Athletics are a vital part of the North Yarmouth Academy education. Along with academics, the arts and other activities, they complete the NYA experience. Athletics also help students understand the rewards that come with working hard and playing hard. That is why the majority of NYA coaches are also faculty members, and why NYA offers a sport for every student, regardless of athletic ability – gifted athletes who will contribute to a state championship team as well as novices who have never held a stick or kicked a ball. Participating in athletics at NYA offers students a chance to socialize and make friends in many different peer groups. NYA offers a variety of sports each season, giving students a full range of choices. NYA offers 17 sports and supports 62 teams across our middle and upper schools.

NYA has earned a reputation as a perennial contender for state championships in many sports. In the past year, 22 of our 24 varsity teams have qualified for post-season play. In addition to numerous individual champions, since 2000 North Yarmouth Academy athletic teams have captured 35 Maine state championships
