North Yarmouth Academy seeks students whose academic ability, motivation and personal integrity will contribute significantly to the school community. Applicants with the greatest chance of acceptance demonstrate a strong work ethic, a potential for growth, a positive, constructive attitude and good citizenship. The ideal NYA student is one who has a willingness to contribute to and gain from a challenging college preparatory program offering opportunities for involvement in extracurricular activities and the exploration of intellect.
The admission process is designed to identify the following characteristics:
The school seeks a wide range of information on all candidates. This information includes, but is not limited to, teachers' recommendations, past and present academic performance, achievement and aptitude tests, educational and psychological evaluations, extracurricular activity involvement, citizenship, community service responsibilities, writing sample and personal interviews. Test results are important in determining patterns of strengths and weaknesses; however, the Admission Committee is aware that standardized tests cannot measure motivation and perseverance.
Admission to North Yarmouth Academy is a competitive process and, in addition to the above, students are evaluated in relationship to the pool of students who are applying for a position.
NYA offers candidates the option of applying for Early Decision or Regular Admission. Candidates applying for Early Decision must complete the application by December 1 and will be notified of the admission decision by December 15. Regular admission candidates must complete application by February 11 and will have an admission decision mailed to them by March 10. Late applicants (after March 10) are encouraged to apply and are considered as their files become complete.
