North Yarmouth Academy hosts "Photography And Transformation" Exhibit by Jeffrey Stevensen

December 13, 2007, Yarmouth, Maine: North Yarmouth Academy (NYA) hosts Portland photographer Jeffrey Stevensen's exhibit entitled "Photography And Transformation" in the Curtis Building, first floor (148 Main Street, Yarmouth) through January 31, 2008. The exhibit space is open to the public during regular school hours (Monday – Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.).

Described by Abbie Sewall, NYA photography teacher, as "first-rate, high quality black and white photography," the pieces in this show are drawn primarily from a body of work exploring Portland's old waterfront in the 1980's. Stevensen selected additional photographs, as well, to give an indication of his range of subject matter. Most of the Portland work was created with an 8x10 view camera. His approach to the subject matter is documentary and more, infusing his personal vision into the project. "The choice of where to point my camera conformed to no purely historical hierarchy. I photographed that which struck my eye, and assumed that the totality of my photographs would convey the larger truth of the subject," explained Stevensen. He spent many weeks "scouting subjects and patiently waiting for the right sense of promise in a day's light and sky."

Stevensen's studio is in Portland, and he has been a photographer for 30 years.

North Yarmouth Academy is an independent, college preparatory, coeducational day school serving students in grades 6 through 12. NYA is dedicated to fostering integrity, character and intellect in young adults.
