March 20, 2008, Yarmouth, Maine: North Yarmouth Academy (NYA) senior Cole Paiement (Woolwich) received a Gold Key Award from the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards. Of more than 6,000 regional entries, 650 student art pieces received a Gold Key Award. The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards are a national program run by The Alliance for Young Artists and Writers. Their mission is to celebrate creativity in young people, and it is one of the only programs that recognizes teenagers who excel in art and writing. Paiement's piece was Untitled, spray paint on wood panel.
Upper School Art teacher Mimi Olins submitted Paiement's painting because "it stood out as an original approach to working with spray paint and stencils. The finished product shows mastery of materials and concept." Olins continued, "Cole has an active studio practice at home. He is extremely creative and bright. He independently takes risks like exploring new media and experimenting with unusual techniques." Paiement has been accepted at Rochester Institute of Technology, Trinity University, Washington University and University of Maine at Orono-Honors Program.
