North Yarmouth Academy's Kate Merrill is Maine's Schoolgirl Golf Champion

October 19, 2007, Yarmouth, Maine: North Yarmouth Academy (NYA) varsity golfer Kate Merrill (junior, Portland) finished first at the high school golf championships at Natanis Golf Course in Vassalboro, Maine on October 13 to become the 2007 State Schoolgirl Individual Golf Champion. Merrill is the only female golfer on NYA’s varsity golf team. She shot a 77. She is also the 2007 Western Maine Conference Individual Girls Champion. This is the second year in a row Merrill has earned this title.

Coach Don Curtis said of Merrill, "Kate is a dream to coach. This is a fitting end to a storybook season for her." Merrill began playing golf at the age of eight and has been a starting member of the NYA golf team since her freshman year. This year, Merrill started in the number one position, then moved to number two after three matches. She won all her remaining six matches and was undefeated as number two. She will be competing in the New England Competition in June 2008 at Bretwood Golf Course, Keene, NH.
