February 4, 2010, Yarmouth, Maine: On January 21 and 22, Maine photographer Fred Field, father of Robert ('12, Cumberland), visited teacher Heidi Grant's freshman English classes at North Yarmouth Academy (NYA). Field works regularly for a variety of newspapers, colleges, and companies, including the Boston Globe, Harvard University, Colby College, and the Portland Press Herald. His work has appeared in numerous magazines including: Time, People, Parade, Sports Illustrated, CFO, Golf Digest, US News & World Report, and dozens of newspapers throughout the world. He is widely known around the area for his recent book, "Maine Places, Maine Faces." Field shared his photos with the classes and drew parallels between "stories" captured in a photo and stories captured in writing. The classes are studying the short story.
Field's presentation enabled students to better understand several of the essential elements of short stories, such as point of view, mood, setting, and characterization, in a different way. Grant noted, "My hope in having Fred visit was to help my student writers make connections between what photographers and short story writers do. Both see the world in a slightly different way, both have a limited space to tell their stories, and both try to achieve what Edgar Allan Poe described as the 'single unifying effect.'"
Field's presentation was made possible by a grant from the NYA Parents Association.
